My Dear Friends,
Morning dawns as brightly today as yesterday, the world continues to revolve, and the birds are happily squawking and feeding at the back yard bird feeder. And we have elected Barack Obama to be our president. We have elected Mark Udall to be our Senator. It was a very good night for Democrats nation-wide, for the Supreme Court, for our country, and for our future. Remember where you were Tuesday night when you heard our next president, your grandchildren will want to know, for Tuesday night this nation made history.
I am, of course, disappointed that I didn’t win election to the State House. But I am cheered by two things: the victories noted above, and the literally thousands of new friends I have made over the last year or so. I really did, and do, mean all those things I said about the environment, about creating new, good paying jobs and protecting our water, about each and every one of you. I am so grateful.
To my fellow candidates, I enjoyed walking the path with you. To my friends, to the 9,277 individuals who voted for me - there are not words to express my appreciation. We gained support from Republicans and Independents. The most votes won by any Democrat in our house district was 4,800 - we improved our position in the house district. Obama and Udall also lost in four of our counties.
The philosopher Horace wrote: “Life grants nothing to us mortals without hard work.” The last year has seen a great deal of hard work by a number of wonderful friends, family, and fellow candidates. And I think while we lost the election, by a very important measure, we won. We gained new friends, learned new things, and experienced a remarkable and transformational journey. A year ago, it was just me, talking about running for the State House - today, I find my life enriched by so many new and magnificent friends, by very educational experiences, and by a rich and profound personal experience of running for office. I do not regret the choice made last November, and I look forward to the next challenge. We are, all of us, bound together by this extraordinary experience, and I am most grateful.
I send my love and appreciation to each of you.
